Effect of glycerol plasticizer loading on the physical, mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties of arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea) starch biopolymers

Abstract This research was set out to explore the development of arrowroot starch (AS) films using glycerol (G) as plasticizer at ratio 15, 30, and 45% (w/w, basis) solution casting technique. The developed were analyzed in terms physical, structural, mechanical, thermal, environmental, barrier properties. incorporation AS film-making reduced brittleness fragility films. An increment concentration caused an film thickness, moisture content, solubility water, whereas density water absorption reduced. tensile strength modulus G-plasticized significantly from 9.34 1.95 MPa 620.79 36.08 MPa, respectively, while elongation break enhanced 2.41 57.33%. FTIR analysis revealed that intermolecular hydrogen bonding occurred between plasticized compared control showed higher thermal stability than cross-sectional micrographs containing had homogeneity 15% 30%. Water vapour permeability increased by increase concentrations. findings this provide insights into bio-degradable food packaging.
